As I was working Gigondas in the round pen Sunday morning, I noticed she was having a hard time focusing. I followed her gaze and saw Scout and Cali running amok at the ranch! HUH? I had just left them in their corral. I'd set out a bucket of beet pulp to soak and had led Gigondas up to the round pen to work with her and to brush her. But, she seemed very distracted. Turns out, Scout decided she did NOT wish to WAIT for her beet pulp, so she BROKE the lock on the chain around the gate, and led Cali out to nibble on the pulp. Yup. LITTLE BUGGERS! Of course, we got them back into the corral and I ran out to the hardware store, bought a new lock, bought a new 2' chain to additionally put around the gate, and 2 MORE locks! He, hee! Let's see if they can get out now!

I'm glad they didn't get too far.
Those little stinkers. If my horses were able to bust out, they could get into the hay and founder or colic, so I'm adamant about locking the chain. Lostine can bust out of a chain easily. Bombay is a master of unlocking the round pen gate, so I had to put a lock on that too, otherwise he would break the gate by swinging it back and forth.
That's good that you reinforced the gate, because in my experience, once they learn to escape they go out the same way forever. :( That's why my horse, Cowboy, will probably always be stalled.
