Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Hubby made a new friend!

Hubby made a new friend at the Whitewater Preserve Tuesday.  We don't know if the little guy was curious or if he was angry that hubby was standing next to HIS desert willow tree!  What do you think?

Here he is hovering near hubby's ear.
 Checking out hubby...
 More checking...
He's not sure about hubby!

Silly Quad

"Are you talkin' to me?"

Silly boy.  All he wanted to do last Saturday was... EAT!

I'll be heading back up there tomorrow.  Hubby is off work today and we may take a morning ride out to Whitewater, which is the other direction from the horses.  AND, I have to babysit the grandson again this afternoon.

Milk drunk...He LOVES to snuggle!

Ravens and snakes...oh, my!

There is a family of ravens up at the horse ranch.  They've been there for years.  Oh, and there is an owl who roosts in the pine tree right next to the gate.  I've accidentally frightened him/her a couple of times.  And, there's a hawk who preys on the baby quail...sigh...Not very many of them make it to adulthood.

I haven't seen any snakes up there this spring, YET, but rattlesnakes ARE coming out of hibernation and people are seeing them nearby.  One lady was bitten by one in Garner Valley, which is right over the mountain.  And, several people have posted on Facebook about finding rattlesnakes on their property.

In the meantime, WE have a gopher snake here in our back yard AT HOME!  We've had a neighbor of our daughter come and do some trimming and raking and apparently he found it this morning.  I was up at the horse ranch, but he told my husband.  AND, the snake was...er... injesting something!  Hopefully it was a RAT, not a bird!  I'm sure if I see it, I'll let out a huge scream and then run into the house!  But who knows?

Had a good visit with the horses today

After being officially retired now for two whole weeks, this was the first day I had a chance to go visit the horses, so off I went this morning.  FINALLY!  Between eye exams, and a couple of appointments for a new bridge (while I still have dental and vision insurance), I've been busy!

The horses are all fine, but they were all screaming for an extra meal.  Sunni is nice and filled out, while Quad is...well, he paces a lot and he is thin.  The owner has upped his daily scoop and he now gets more than he has in the past.  Scout is fine.  Gigondas needs to be brushed, but I was short on time today, so I'll return probably on Tuesday, since another storm will be moving in that day and I want to get photos of the clouds.  Plus, if it is raining, who can resist the smell of wet pavement?

This was out last storm, about two weeks ago...I took this photo on one of my last days of work.

Retirement? How about just "TIREDMENT"???

I've been going straight now since last Friday when baby Brady was born.  Actually, I worked that week, too.  So, it's been 11 days.  So, today, I hit the wall.  I have absolutely NO energy.  I guess my body thinks it is Sunday?  I did drive down to school and sign my final paycheck, stop in to visit with the baby, and do some grocery shopping.  Then I came home and took a 2 1/2 hour nap!  At 11:00 a.m.!!! I guess my body needs the rest.  Even grandmas get tired!

That's me and his other grandma and Ellie getting Brady ready for his first BATH!  He screamed and turned red and then went to sleep!
