Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Cactus garden at Superstition Mountain museum~Cactus Monday~053011

Hubby and I FINALLY got to stop at the Superstition Mountain museum yesterday afternoon. We've missed seeing the inside our last two trips because we've arrived too late and it has been closed. But, yesterday we arrived about 2:30 p.m. and it was open, so inside we went. But, first we had to take a tour of their cactus garden. OUCH! That was a lot of cactus. And, they had some really mean-looking cholla, too! Can somebody tell me~How do you train your horse to avoid cactus? Cactus Monday for May 30, 2011. I have to say I am glad I don't have to worry about my horse and cactus ;-) Glad you got to see the museum finally!

Lol, you don't. And if you ever get in trouble out there (your horse bucking wildly) GET OFF before the cholla. I've been in it many times. If I know we're gonna have to chase something, I wear full batwing chaps that cover my whole leg.
I've also been toodling along, hands full of water bottle, phone, reins and had the horse flip a cholla ball onto it's leg. Full on rodeo right in the middle of the cholla forest. It's a heck of an incentive to stay on, I tell ya. (I did)
Cholla ain't no foolin'. That's BAD STUFF.
