Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Our trip yesterday

We got as far as above Crowley Lake, which is on Highway 395, about 24 miles above Bishop. Then, the road just was too icy. Either chains or 4-wheel drive were required and we didn't have either, so we turned around. No sense in taking chances, especially in late afternoon. Many, many cars had been buried in the snow overnight and they were covered with snow and icicles yesterday. We even had mud icicles hanging on our car! We saw several CALTRANS snow plows go by us on 395 and we are hoping that by today, the road will be passable to Mammoth. That seems to be where the majority of the snow laden cars were coming from! Anyway, here are some pics from yesterday.

The problem is that it is just cold enough that both the snow and ice won't melt. Someone sent in a picture to CNN of himself trying to dig his cars out of his driveway in Tahoe. They were just two white humps. Happy New Year.

I love your trips where you just go driving around. When Wade and I get the kid out of the house, this is what I want to do. Before the child, it seems like that's all I did. You never knew where I'd turn up. But now the child says I'm a maniac if I take a shortcut or a dirt road. Geez. No fun. I'm so envious of your road trips!
Love the snow pics!

And you sent us that same storm yesterday! Brrr! We've got about 6" on the ground and ice everywhere. It's so cold that the black ice on the roads are treacherous.
I can't even begin to feel warm until we get back up into the double digits again!
