Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Sunni and ferrier

The ferrier is coming out Monday to trim all my horses. Sunni needs it the most. His big 'ole feet REALLY need a trim! Unfortunately, the last time this ferrier was out, it was a windy day and I decided to pass on Sunni's trim, since he is so spooky. I can work with him and he lifts his feet on command for me, but he has a fear of men and this ferrier is a man. However, Solomon is very calm and gentle. I've watched him with other horses and none of the Pasos give him any trouble! I hope Sunni behaves! I'm bringing a friend up Saturday to meet all the horses and we will work with him then.

Is it just me or are farriers a breed of their own? I have had more trouble finding a farrier who understands horses.Maggie has an old stifle injury and does not have full extension in one hind leg. I exsplain this to every new farrier and insist stand be set at lowest setting. All is well until they get out here, then it becomes a rodeo. The last guy got so rough verbally and physically Maggie got enough ran backwards, busted lead then ran like fire to very far end of pasture. He had a dancing, swearing fit, telling me how dangerous she was! "NO, she is not. She wanted safety
and found it. If she were a dangerous horse she would've kicked u right upside ur head. I asked him to leave. He went to a neighbors to do a job, lost temper, and started beating on her mare w a file.
Is it just me? I had one old farrier who was quiet and did a good job.. "my dangerous horse" would doze during trim w him.Soooo.... anyone out there having farrier woes?

I always seem to have a couple of youngsters who aren't quite sure about the farrier with their hind feet, anyway but they gradually get over it since he's a good guy.

Terri, the OTHER ferrier was a rough old guy and went in all blustery and Sunni ran away from him! Then the guy tried to get him to "whoa" for an hour! GUESS WHAT? It didn't work. I like this ferrier. He's Hispanic, very soft spoken. I don't believe he will have a problem with Sunni. Sometimes he even sings to the horses!!!

I have found a woman farrier who does natural balance. Maybe she will work out. :-)
The last guy did natural balance as well. Three of her four hooves looked great, just couldn't abide his temper. He was not young. Been doing this for almost 30 years, he claimed. I think just from what I could glean from that one morning, he has been seriously hurt over the years and is fearful. When Maggie just shifted her weight he would jump back. "She's gonna kick." I told him once I had never seen her kick, but I might. Maybe the new girl will work.
Thanks for your comments everyone!
