Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Valley of Fire, Nevada~Boulders~Sunday Stills Challenge 050910

After we left Shiloh, we stopped by Whole Foods in Summerlin and bought sandwiches. We were both tired from the heat, so we drove back to the hotel and ate lunch and watched the Kentucky Derby. I really liked the gray, Paddy O' Prado ( and I wanted to watch his race. He came in third. After the race, about 4:00 p.m., we decided to head out and drive out to the Valley of Fire. I mean, come on! With a name like that, who wouldn't want to investigate it? We had never been there before. It's a state park in Nevada, about 45 miles outside of Vegas. You have to pay a fee to enter (I think it was $10 or $15...I don't remember!) Anyway, along the highway, we could see patches of red rock. Once inside the park, our eyes were treated to a real feast of bright red rocks. It was good to get there in the late afternoon and see all the colors against a late afternoon sun! Here are some pics from our visit to Valley of Fire, Nevada. See all the BOULDERS? Sunday Stills Challenge for May 9, 2010.

I've been there on one of my trips to Las Vegas. Sometimes I just have to get away from sin city and yes, the name attracted me too. isn't it pretty, especially at sunset?

It's amazing how there is beauty in something that is so desolate.

Wow, you have amazing scenery that we just don't have in the UK. I love the pictures you post on your blog, and wish for a bit of that desert sun!

I was reading about 'feedlots' in previous comments - I have never come across that word before, and am stunned! What a waste of life!
Best wishes
