Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Here comes the Queen (Scout)...

Look how DARK she is in winter!  I can't figure out why she is so dark in winter, and so light in summer...shouldn't it be the other way around?  Okay...several of you have written that it's because in the winter, her dark coat absorbs the light, and in the summer it reflects it.  That makes sense!  She sure is dark here!

Oh, is she a roan? I have a roan who is like that too, very dark in winter, and in summer so light he looks like a different horse. I think it actually makes sense because in winter, when it's cold, you'd want more of the dark hairs to absorb the sun's heat, right?

is it because of the heat and sun? I have no idea so just a suggestion! But she isss so cute and really dark! Gorgeous Scout

Its probably down to light. Dark absorbs light therefore heat from the sun, light reflects, therefore cool in summer.
