Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Sunni's tail tale and WHO was the culprit?

Last winter, both Scout and Sunni were boarded in the same large paddock as Cali. So, about a year ago, hubby and I went to visit the horses and were shocked by the condition of their tails! SOMEBODY, during a cold night, ATE OFF THEIR TAILS! No, really! And, just WHO would do this? So, this weekend, I was pleased to see Sunni's long, full tail nearly grown back! Scout's tail isn't as long as Sunni's, but it has mostly grown back. And the culprit was...CALI!

I know exactly about "short tails" ! Unfortunately for my big guy Duke, he came with just a stub tail. I snuck out to the corral one night in the summer and trimmed 6" off my sisters gelding(it was way too long) sat up all night braiding the ends and sewed them into my horse's tail! He had a beautiful "red" switch to brush flies away. Duke was a dark bay!!

Seriously?? They chew on each other's tails?? That's just wrong.

Well at least noone cut it off. A friend of mine in PA went out to find her horses' hoof length tail cut bluntly with something very sharp straight across all the way up to the base of the bone!
She suspects someone in the Amish community that surrounds her house because they make things with horse tail hair. Can you imagine, though?

My neighbor's foal chewed off her pretty tail until it was just a nub. I hope it grows back in time for fly season. gah!
