Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

New heat record!

Yesterday a new heat record was set here in the Coachella Valley! 118 degrees, the highest since 1998. Oh, boy! When it is that hot, you basically go into "survival" mode. We walk slower, work slower, and drink LOTS and LOTS of water! Every time I had to go outside, I just cringed! The pavement reflect the heat right back into your face and by 2:30, I was pretty much done with my class room for the day. I just couldn't think clearly. I sat down in my "teacher" chair and just blankly stared at my blank bulletin boards and couldn't think what to put up, so I gave up and came home. Oh, well, my bboards aren't done, but I'll finish them next week. School starts Monday and I'll have 18 new, eager faces and names to learn! HA! Wish me luck! Here are some pics of Cali taking a mud bath! She's got the right idea!

My, that is darn hot! Tooooo hot to have to be doing anything but napping or standing in a spray of water. Cali has the right idea.

Our last weekend. And yours is busting thermometers. 118 degrees! Doesn't the human brain boil at 115 degrees? Enjoy your final hours. Our school begins on Monday. I had to move our after school program to another building and was complaining about the heat and humidity. Now I am totally ashamed to admit the thermometer never left the seventies. Here's to a wonderful 2009-10 school year!

Holy socks! That IS hot for there! Craziness. I think it was 115 here yesterday. This time of year, I'm almost out of my mind with the heat. All I know is if I hang on just a LITTLE bit longer, it will cool off. But dang, NOT FAST ENOUGH.
Baths for everyone!! Misters!! (that's where I get cooled off)

Oh WOW! And I thought it was hot here in Oregon at 114 degrees! We broke records too! But hopefully the heat is all gone for the year. At 114 degrees, rear view mirrors fell off car windows. Your skin felt like it was burning. I hovered in side most of the time. It was just way to hot. My horses sweated like you would not believe! Never seen a horse sweat before. We left sprinklers on in the pasture for them and they did use them. Hope it cools down soon.
