Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Horses in the mist

It was so misty Saturday that driving up the mountain was treacherous! I couldn't see at all in some spots. The clouds were drifting in and out and I even nearly missed the turnoff for our little mountain cafe! We had Hal, our son, with us and he was hungry, so we pulled over to get some breakfast. As we walked in, we saw my aunt and uncle there, so we joined them for breakfast. They had driven up from San Diego and we were planning on meeting them at the horse ranch, but here they were! So, we all sat down for a family breakfast and got up-to-date on all the family news! When we walked out to the cars to leave, it was raining! We drove out to the ranch, they drove home to San Diego and their warm house! And, it was a COLD rain! Here's a pic of one of the ranch dogs. Can you see the water dripping off her? Poor baby! I made a mash of shredded beet pulp, sweet feed, rice bran and gave some to all the horses! They couldn't WAIT! We couldn't wait to get home to our house! Turns out, an ice storm hit the area that night. Not snow. ICE. I drove up Sunday. What a difference a day makes! The horses were all enjoying the sunshine (what little there was) and appeared to be okay. Some of their waterers froze overnight and we had to unplug them! Another storm is scheduled to come through either today or tomorrow and temps will be down into the 20's, which is COLD for Southern California! I remember when they were up in Lancaster. Their water troughs were frozen in the morning. They would break through the ice to get to the water or I'd go out and do it for them. I've also included some pics from yesterday's drive through the mountains. I'll post some other photos this week.

Nice pictures. I envy people who live in San Diego--that's where my dad's from--and I have an aunt, uncle and cousins down there that I get to visit on occasion! Love it!!!

What a gorgeous picture of the mountains!! Here in MN we have snow, wind and temps below zero. I wonder why I live here sometimes. You have beautiful horses. I will continue to follow your blog. Thanks for the well wishes for Scotty. :-)

What a nice surprise to find your family just in time for a warm breakfast together, before ahving to head up through the cold mists to feed the horses. Brr!
That mash sounds so yummy for your equine friends, too. Sounds like everyone enjoyed a nice warm breakfast that day :)
