Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Little visitors~Nature Notes 092310

Saturday, when I walked around the ranch with my camera, I noticed a LOT of hummingbirds at the various feeders at the ranch. The owner faithfully feeds them and there were probably around 20 or so. They are so territorial! I noticed that some visited the feeder by the front door, while these were at two other feeders on their side porch. I was so amazed to watch them. I would have taken more photos, but the battery in my camera died and I wasn't able to take more. Maybe this weekend I'll have another opportunity! Aren't they interesting?

Our hummingbirds left last week for the great migration south. We will sure miss watching them. They are so much fun and so lovely, too.

Neat shots of the hummingbirds. I have yet to capture them at my feeders. My husband sees them but I always arrive to late with my camera. It'll have to be NEXT year now as they have flown southward. :(

I came back to read more about the horses. I had no idea that this was going on with horses, but I should have looking at how domestic pets are treated..I am going to look into making a donation...Michelle

Michelle, THANK YOU so much! The plight of our mustangs is indeed a sad one, along with horses that are abandoned to feedlots by their owners. So many people right now can't afford to feed their horses in this economy. People are losing their jobs, their homes, and their horses. It's just so sad. If you read Joe's blog at www.tbfriends.com you'll see that people DAILY give up their horses.

It's true. We've decided to rehome our 2 TBs. It breaks my heart and scares me to death to think of what could happen if we choose the wrong people to home them with!! It's so nice to know that some people care enough to help and protect them.

The hummingbirds are beautiful =) They really are such fascinating little guys, aren't they?
