Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Ruler on Ice

I'm glad Ruler on Ice won the Belmont Stakes today. Hubby and I barely made it to our hotel in time to watch the running of today's Belmont Stakes. Animal Kingdom was the favorite, as well as Shakelford. Now, I love both of these horses (both are beautiful chestnuts!) :-), but it was the little gelding, Ruler on Ice, that won the race and then hardly looked winded after 1 and 1/2 miles. And, what is the nickname of Belmont? Yup. "Graveyard of Champions"...look how many times a horse that isn't the favorite has come back to win this race...a LOT! And, I'm especially glad that Ruler on Ice is a great-grandson of the great Alydar. HA! I hope his MURDERER saw the race today and realizes what a crime he committed. Alydar, you live on through your ancestors and Ruler on Ice did you proud today! To see Ruler on Ice's pedigree, please go to this link: http://www.pedigreequery.com/ruler+on+ice. I was saddened to see that his dam's sire, Saratoga Six, was one of the stallions that perished in the fire at the New Mexico Stallion Station fire back in 2006. If you wish to read up on Alydar, here's a link: http://www.hitak.com/home/Alydar

I love the three races in the springtime. I, too, watched the race today. It was a year that I didn't have a favorite, but enjoyed seeing somebody come through as the winner who was hardly expected to. Great horse. And I loved the rider. So glad he won.
