Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Farrier visit

The farrier and his assistant came yesterday to do EVERY horse up at the ranch!  That's a full day's work!  Phew~!  Those two guys are wonderful, however.  I remember the first time I had somebody up there come and do Sunni's feet.  The guy was very rough with Sunni and Sunni would NOT stand still.  The more the idiot shouted, the more Sunni got wound up, so he shouted more, and Sunni freaked out more.  I finally said, "ENOUGH!" and never had him come back.  I like this farrier now.  He is very quiet, moves very slowly, and Sunni now trusts him and doesn't move a muscle!   :-)  The guy sort of sings to the horses and they just relax.  What a difference!  We've had him now for several years and I'm so thankful for his work!

It was a cool day up at the ranch and last week they had two FULL days of rain, so everything was very muddy.  Ugh.  No fun.  I'm going back Wednesday and hopefully by then the arena will be dry enough that I can let them out for some R&R.

Quad is a real pro at this!
 Mud everywhere!

Is that just a picture of horse shoes or are you shoeing some of your horses? There's really no need to shoe horses if they are not being ridden on paved roads or rocks. You can save yourself a lot of money to just trim them.

Oh, no...4 of my horses don't have shoes, they just get a trim. Lucille gets shoes (always has) for some reason. I'll have to ask the ranch owner...something to do with her feet.

There are a dozen horses at the ranch. Some of them DO wear shoes, especially the ones ridden in parades, but those horses aren't mine...they are the ranch owners'. Only Lucille gets shoes (for some reason...)

Even Quad is shoeless these days! Once he got his racing shoes off, he's been barefoot and lovin' it! :-)

Yeah, different horses have different needs.
