Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Laptop

Well, my former laptop has been wiped clean, all photos removed to the hard drive, and it's on its way to Ben's mom.  She needs it for a statistics class she's taking and I have another one which needs a new cord ($9.99, BUT...we have to send it to Chicago to get it!).  I can't wait to get this other laptop, which was hubby's old one.  It has a 10 key keyboard on it, which will come in handy when I have to do grades next fall, AND it is PHOTOSHOP!  Whoo, whoo.  Frankly, I'm happy with BeFunky!  If you haven't gone to BeFunky, take a look.  I posted some examples on my other blog and you can see them here:  http://desertsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2012/04/befunky-photo-editing.html  On another note, I did a quick trip up the mountain to check on the horses yesterday.  All were fine.  It was windy up there and I didn't want to take any of them out.  I refilled their pellets, checked Cali's fly mask, and brushed out Sunni.  I left 2 gallons of water out for the Pacific Crest Trail hikers, and came home.  I took 2 two-hour naps as I let down from last year.  We're heading up to the Sierra Nevada on Monday for a few days, and I'll be posting along the way.

Very nice of you to leave water for PCT hikers - I just finished reading "Wild" by Cheryl Stayed - who walked the PCT by herself.

Yes, I just read that book, too! While I didn't enjoy her pages about her drug use, I did enjoy reading about her adventures on the PCT. It actually led me to seek out the PCT where it crosses Highway 74 up in our local mountains. I just finished "SkyWalker", another account of a hike through the entire PCT from Mexico to Canada. I enjoyed this book much more than Strayed's because he actually described the other hikers he met on the trail. I have two more books on my "to read" list now!

Yeah, the drug use wasn't a good part of her life & I skipped the several pages dealing with Lady's death, but am glad the experience had a positive effect on her life (wonder if her feet ever recovered?). I'll have to check out "Sky Walker." I enjoyed Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" - although a totally different point of view & very funny - not the same trail, but still a good read. I'm sure the PCT hikers are grateful to find the water - during parts of the book, I was very thankful for the ice cold water I had in my hand.

I actually bought "Becoming Odessa", about a woman who hikes the entire App. Trail! I also have "A Blistered Kind of Love", about a couple who do the PCT. Maybe we should swap books??? I really enjoyed "Skywalker" and I learned a lot of interesting facts about the Sierras and Crater Lake.
