Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

My new BFF (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5...)

Okay.  I drove into town and bought a bag of peanuts and a bag of sunflower seeds and sat back to watch the show on the railing of the porch right outside the kitchen window in our June Lake cabin.  Actually, this cabin is halfway between June Lake and Silver Lake, so it isn't near the water.  But, it's near the woods and I've seen a deer come out of the woods right onto the road here.  I went for a short hike yesterday afternoon and didn't see anything.  There's a guy with a dog right down the street and it ran out right in front of me onto the street as I was heading to the store...(shaking head...) He finally caught it and chained it up.  Anyway, I awoke at 5:30 this morning.  The blue jays were chattering, the squirrels were chattering...everybody wanted their breakfast!  So I dutifully put out peanuts and sunflower seeds.  One blue jay took a peanut, flew off, and came back with it, and traded it for another one!  I've never seen that before.  There are two squirrels who live in this territory.  They chase each other up a nearby pine tree and then the blue jays swoop in for the goodies!  (silly squirrels!)  The squirrels aren't the least bit afraid of people.  In fact, they seem to associate us with food (DUH!)...I haven't seen any hawks around here, but I'll look and listen for them.  So, here are my new friends.
