Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Quad has colic...

Quad has colic (again)...he had an episode a couple of years ago.  This one seems to be much worse...he definitely is in pain, even after a visit from the vet, and a shot, and a mineral oil tubing.  He HAS passed some poop, but not enough.

Please keep him in your prayers.  Here he is enjoying a romp in the arena, from earlier this month.  His head was down today, he was stretching and looking at his side...

Thank you.

I'll be thinking of him. You know, my vets have always told me to hand walk the horses around to get things moving through the intestines, but my current vet actually went so far as to tell me lunge a colicking horse at the trot. It's tough to make them do that when they are in pain, but it does help. Grooming relaxes the horse too, which is important since pain makes them tighten up their muscles and hold blockages in place.
