Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Scout and Cali

My good friend Barbara came up for 2 days and helped me with our little mustangs, Scout and Cali. Scout is the little roan and Cali is the palomino. I was at the point I really didn't know WHAT to do with them next! Boy, Barb sure showed me what to do! PHEW! She took Scout and said, "YOU do what I do with Cali" and off we went! We tied them, brushed them, picked up their feet, went all over their bodies with our hands and then lunged them. It was GREAT! Cali even got a saddle pad put on her!
Thanks, BARB! You are wonderful!

I'm reading a couple other mustangs blogs and I enjoy reading about their adventures with their mustangs. Mustangs are such wonderful horses! They are SMART and curious! Ours are so different~ Scout is very intelligent, yet wary, while Cali is so friendly and trusting!
It even RAINED on us one day up in the mountains! We really had 2 nice, cool, cloudy days to work them and I really needed that. It has been so darn HOT in Southern California, even up in the mountains! It has been TOO HOT to do much with the horses. I'm going to start going up in the evenings and working them on my own now.

Your mustangs are gorgeous--you're doing great! I've too have found mustangs to be intelligent--and more cautious in giving up control than domestics. The home-grown babes are around people from birth and, if they've had good experienes, are trusting. These mustangs had to survive, so it takes much longer to get their body, then their head, then their feet--sometimes it's very frustrating--and then you get a miraculous break-through--and how much more you appreciate it when you know at what a cost to them it is. Looks like you've picked good ones there. Keep it up and I'll check back. I'll also add your blog to mine, so others who are adopting can find you and get inspiration and ideas. :) LOVE the pictures!!!

In regards to his not liking to be tied. Have you ever seen Clinton Anderson's tie ring? He also has a video that goes with it I believe, and it's supposed to help any horse get used to being tied. I've seen him work with some horses and it's amazing what it will do. Check it out, I believe it can help you.
