Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 3 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Cali last spring

The horses are currently shedding out. Beauty is a mess and I NEED to get up and brush her when the wind isn't blowing over 40 mph like it was yesterday! Last night was horrible here and we lost a huge branch of our Chinaberry tree. Trees are down all over the city and I may run out later and take some pics. Cali's summer coat is now showing and I need to brush her! The vet is coming today, braving the winds, to give the herd their shots. I'll have to drive up the mountain in the wind and the forecast is for 65 mph winds until noon! YIKES! I'm hoping that by 1:00, the winds calm down, but this spring break has been very unusual. It's ALWAYS nice and warm by now and the high today will be 65 in the desert and 55 in the mountains! Anyway, here's Cali from last spring! She's a fuzzy wuzzy right now, but I did see her summer coat yesterday. MAYBE this weekend I'll be able to brush them!

Easter, horses, kittens, and grandkids

Yesterday was a beautiful, warm Spring day, but hubby and I were so tired from the weekend that we just vegged at home! We literally didn't get out of the house until 6:00 p.m., when we had leftovers with our son and grandson and girlfriend. I mean, how lazy is that? Teachers frequently crash their first day of vacation and this morning I'm up at 4:00 a.m., ready for the new day! Here are some pics from Easter weekend, including the newest member of our family, Abby, the kitten I got from my cousin Valerie!

People of the mists

This was the view of Lake Hemet on Saturday. Down on the desert floor, it was clear and sunny, but once we started driving up the mountain, we encountered mist. We saw many cars driving down that were covered with snow. Lake Hemet is below 5,000 feet, so there wasn't snow there, but the clouds LOVE to settle on the mountains there and hang out! Hubby is part Iroquois and they are "The People of the Mist" because in their lands, the mist hangs on the ground. Here, in our local mountains, the clouds hang on the mountains and then disappear. The warm air from the desert acts like a wall to keep them out, but we enjoyed our cool weather up in the mountains on Saturday. I love how the weather on the mountains changes and is so varied! Sunday was a perfectly clear, warm day and all the clouds and mist and fog were gone!

Snow!

I looked up at our local mountains Friday evening (see bottom pic) and said, "Looks like it's snowing there!"...but hubby said, "No, it's too warm!" Uh...sorry, hubby! The storm dumped 3-4 inches on our local mountains, not where our horses are, but further up. The little town of Idyllwild got a nice dusting of snow. We saw quite a few cars coming down the hill covered with snow when we drove up in the morning! We stopped and ate breakfast at our favorite restaurant/bakery there and enjoyed the view. Have a Happy Easter!

Back to the mountains today!

As soon as we finish our morning coffee, hubby and I are heading out back into the mountains where I went last weekend. Our storm clouds from yesterday have blown over to Arizona, the sky is blue, the air is crisp...I can't wait to go! We'll stop and buy some dog food and sweet feed from the feed store later. Have a good weekend and have a Happy Easter!

Not one of my horses, but this one was resting by the road when I was out driving last Sunday.

Silly Cali

I'm trying to get my horses used to different kinds of bags and when I emptied out their feed bag, I used it with Scout and Cali. Scout didn't even bat an eye and kept eating. Cali was a little more caution, gave it a couple of sniffs, and then turned her butt to me and the bag as if to say, "Forget the bag...where's the FEED?" Hmmmppfffffff!!!! Silly Cali!
