Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Ravens and snakes...oh, my!

There is a family of ravens up at the horse ranch.  They've been there for years.  Oh, and there is an owl who roosts in the pine tree right next to the gate.  I've accidentally frightened him/her a couple of times.  And, there's a hawk who preys on the baby quail...sigh...Not very many of them make it to adulthood.

I haven't seen any snakes up there this spring, YET, but rattlesnakes ARE coming out of hibernation and people are seeing them nearby.  One lady was bitten by one in Garner Valley, which is right over the mountain.  And, several people have posted on Facebook about finding rattlesnakes on their property.

In the meantime, WE have a gopher snake here in our back yard AT HOME!  We've had a neighbor of our daughter come and do some trimming and raking and apparently he found it this morning.  I was up at the horse ranch, but he told my husband.  AND, the snake was...er... injesting something!  Hopefully it was a RAT, not a bird!  I'm sure if I see it, I'll let out a huge scream and then run into the house!  But who knows?

We are getting so many migratory birds now. Hear the owl almost every night. I'm glad to have them considering the rat population. Wiley cat has brought in at least one mouse every day for a week and sometimes more. I hate the though of him getting fleas from them as he does every summer. Sadly I found a mockingbird in one of the 20 gallon horse water buckets yesterday. Usually the grown birds can get out when they fall in. So far no snakes here yet that we know of, but everytime hubby uses the tractor to take up the tumbleweeds that grow so fast around the horse pens we usually see one of the bullsnakes. Never see them otherwise.
