Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

"L" is for LOOK, smell, bite~ABC Wednesday 100709

I'm trying, once again, to desensitize Sunni to various objects, but it was Cali who was interested in the bird seed bag that I placed on the gate of their corral. Sunni wasn't interested, but Cali sure was~ She LOOKED, she smelled, and then she bit it! ...sigh...silly girl! She isn't the one who needs to be desensitized. She's pretty easygoing with ... whatever~ ABC Wednesday for October 7, 2009.

Mountain colors and coyote~That's My World 100609

It was a beautiful autumn afternoon up at the ranch on Saturday. The leaves are starting to change colors, and I spied a coyote out in one of the fields near the ranch. I'm going to try to get up there today after school to give the horses (and Quad) their psyllium. That's My World for October 6, 2009.

Triple yellow~Mellow Yellow for Monday, 100509

Cali has a new friend! She's made friends with one of the Peruvian mares in the next corral and I caught them grooming each other on Saturday. However, she is ears back with the other one!

Mustang happiness~Sunday Stills 100409

Our two mustangs just love to have some "free time" in the arena. They run. They buck. They enjoy the wind in their manes. They sniff everything! Then they settle down and eat poop. I mean, what could be more fun and happiness? Here are Scout and Cali from a cloudy day last November having fun~ Mustang happiness~Sunday Stills Challenge for October 4, 2009.

Curious horses~Camera Critters for 100309

Last spring I was bringing out the saddle pad for the 3 horses, Cali, Sunni, and Scout to sniff and get used to. The mustangs were okay with it, but it was Sunni, who, after I took these photos, knocked it over and went running away to the far corner of the corral...(sigh)...Of course, now he has been saddled and ridden (finally!). He still needs work on his manners, however, so I will work with him this weekend. Camera Critters for October 3, 2009.

BFF

These two are best friends. I mean, look at them share the bowl! I put two bowls out...one for each of them, but this is how they always eat! Silly horses!

"K" is for kiss and kindness~~ABC Wednesday 093009

It's very strange, but the horse that was the LEAST likely to trust humans, Scout, has now turned into the most trusting and loving! She came to us "halter broke" (NOT!) from the Salt Wells Creek BLM area in Wyoming and was halter broke at the Riverton prison facility. However, from the beginning, she was very wary toward us. It even took our trainer 1 1/2 hours to get Scout haltered the first time! Uh, uh! NO WAY! And, she always had a wary look in her eye. Of course, we had no idea what sort of life Scout had. Cali, on the other hand, was always very trusting and loving. It has taken Scout, however, over two years to finally trust us. Now, she is very curious and demands attention! And, she gets it! My friend Molly loves to come up to the ranch for some "horse time". She and Scout always get along so well! Here is Scout giving Molly a KISS and you can see the KINDNESS between the two of them! ABC Wednesday for September 30, 2009. It looks like our desert heat is finally disappearing. Temps will be down in the 90's for the next week!
