Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Chores and $%&#!!!

Hubby and I are staying up in Idyllwild this weekend. He wanted to get away from phones and dogs and cats, so he found a cute little cabin with a fireplace, kitchen, and furnace. He got to practice his fire-making skills last night and we soon had a roaring fire in the fireplace! He checked out an old Tom Sellect western and we had ham sandwiches and a bottle of Pinot Grigio. I woke up early this morning and took a walk around town and was dive-bombed by a few blue jays! He wanted to stay in the cabin and watch the UCLA basketball game, so I headed over to the horse ranch to work the horses. Unfortunately, nobody was home, and I refuse to work them when I'm at the ranch alone...for obvious reasons. So, I was in the tack room, looking for my Bag Balm for my right thumb, which has a HUGE splinter in it, from one night last week when I arrived home and hubby was still at work. As I fumbled around to get the gate latch open, I inadvertently got this stupid spliter, which I CANNOT get out! It's under my thumb nail and now my thumb is tender and sore...I still can't get it out, but I figured a little Bag Balm would help...right? So, la de dah...I'm moving my saddle stirrups around (now, mind you...I have 4 saddles up on 2 saddle holders up in the tack room) when suddenly...BHAM! One lost its balance (remember 2 are on each holder), so those two saddles came down and OF COURSE, they hit the other two, so four saddles came down on top of me...I went flying...my glasses went flying...I landed on my BUTT with two saddles on top of me! I was PISSED! Yes. There. I said it. ABSOLUTELY PISSED! And, to make matters worse, the damn mice have gnawed through most of the padding of my big saddle and made a fine nest of the padding! So, I now have a bump on my head, a bump on my cheek, my glasses are on my face nearly sideways, I have rat poop in my hair and have to reshampoo it today (I just washed it, OF COURSE, this morning)...and now I can't lift my big saddle back to the saddle holder, so it is sitting outside my tack room, awaiting a MALE to come and lift it back up! I was so dazed that my hands were shaking. I had to go sit in my car for a while! :-( Then, as I got out of my car later to take a photo on the road back to Idyllwild, my $80 (4 twenties) that I stopped and got at the ATM somehow blew out of my jeans pocket and I looked down to see them blowing across the road, so I scrambled to get them back, dodging cars! Oye, vei! I think I'll just stay in the cabin for the rest of the afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!
